AS9100 Quality Management System Standard

VBC Group has continued with its tradition of maintaining a high level of quality via its Quality Management System (QMS) by recently renewing its ISO 9001:2008 accreditation which is now supported by the acclaimed AS 9100:2009 international Aerospace standard.

The ISO 9001 certification comes under the umbrella of the International Organisation for Standardisation, composed of representatives from various national standards organisations that promote worldwide proprietary, industrial and commercial standards.  The ISO 9001:2008 certification deals with the requirements of QMS  based on such principles as strong customer focus, the motivation and implication of top management and the process approach and continual improvement.. VBC uses this specific QMS to ensure their customers are provided with consistent, high quality products and services. To maintain the highest level of process control, internal audits are performed to monitor the effectiveness of this QMS.

AS9100 Quality Management System Standard

While the ISO 9001 is an overall QMS, the AS 9100:2009 provides the framework for a more comprehensive QMS for the aerospace and space industries.  The standard is governed by the International Aerospace Quality Group (IAQG). Details of our certification can be found on the IAQG Oasis database

The goal of the IAQG is to improve product quality and on-time delivery of products. The IAQG do this through the cooperative implementation of initiatives intended to make significant improvements in quality and reductions in cost throughout the value stream.

However, the overall AS9100 quality standard is based on ISO 9001, adding requirements specific to the aviation, space and defence industry, while striving to meet the needs of stakeholders and move forward the IAQG strategy.

Some changes made to the standard are:

1.     Changes to the design specification;

2.     Greater focus on planning and project management; and additional emphasis on risk management and mitigation.

3.     New term “Special requirements” – are requirements identified by the customer or requirements which have high risk to the organization.

4.     New term “Critical Items” – are for example processes, characteristics, parts and software which have significant impact on the product realization & use of product.
